While traditional counseling or therapy is successful in helping many people achieve a sense of wholeness and healing, Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy (EFP) is breaking new ground in the area of psychotherapy. The focus of EFP is not riding or horsemanship, but involves setting up ground activities with the horses that require the client to apply certain skills. EFP helps clients develop leadership skills and confidence; it builds trust, teaches responsibility, and develops a sense of teamwork. Because its goal is to create safe environments and healthy relationships, EFP is an ideal form of psychotherapy for women and children survivors of abuse and soldiers with PTSD. It allows them to rebuild trust and confidence while feeling safe and supported.
Each client is assigned a horse and sessions are facilitated by a licensed, credentialed mental health professional working with a credentialed horse professional. Therapy is conducted on an out-patient basis. For clients in need of long-term residential treatment, referral information to appropriate facilities will be made available.
